- Alec Baldwin, given the choice of Patriot Games or the Broadway revival of Streetcar Named Desire, chose Streetcar
- The novel had the Prince and Princess of Wales and their baby as the targets of the attempted kidnapping
- Two endings were filmed, the alternative ending had Jack Ryan and Sean Miller fighting on large rocks in the middle of the stormy sea instead of on boats. The alternative scene has Ryan killing Miller as well as striking first, but audience reaction at prescreenings was highly negative. The ending was thus reshot to a fight on a boat with Miller striking first. Sean Bean carries a physical memory of the shooting of the fight scenes to this day: a scar on his brow; Harrison acidentally hit home with a boat hook. The scar was later used (and enhanced) to great effect for Bean's hit role as Richard Sharpe in the Sharpe TV series
