Well, as many of you know Firewall opened in 4th place over the weekend with $13.8 million. Here is the results of the top four movies:

1 The Pink Panther $21.7
2 Final Destination 3 $20.1
3 Curious George $15.3
4 Firewall $13.8

Although Firewall performed slightly under expectations ($15 - $18 was projected) one good sign is that it did open better than K19 and Hollywood Homicide. Good word of mouth could possibly help Firewall in the long run. Many are have begun speculating as to why Harrison's return to the silver screen after three years was met with a low turnout and here are some things to consider:

  • Four movies opened in over 2500 screens which made for an extremely crowded weekend.
  • The Pink Panther opened on over 600 more screens than the other three and in some cases got more daily rotations than Fiewall.
  • FD3, which was predicted by the analysts to grab the #1 spot, was a given because of the violence/gore factor that appeals to younger movie-goers.
  • Curious George is a beloved children's book character that parents (Harrison's main fan base age group) grew up with and wanted to treat their young children to.
  • Critics across the board labeled Firewall as an action movie when in fact it was a Thriller. This could have possibly turned movie-goers off.

There is a good chance that Firewall will build up due to various factors:

  • It is doubtful that The Pink Panther will have strong legs due to the negative feedback from audiences. In many cases people were walking out at the half-way mark.
  • FD3 has made it's money opening weekend and true to form for Horror movies, it should drop off.
  • Curious George has been met with mixed reviews and is not going to be strong throughout the rest of it's run. Unlike family favorites such as Finding Nemo and Shrek, CG will not maintain a strong audience.

Although I was very disappointed at Firewall's opening weekend numbers, I am hopeful that good word of mouth will carry this movie the next few weeks. On the right you'll notice I've added a box office tracking section where visitors can keep track daily on how well the movie is doing.

Have some other updates for you and at this time I want to personally thank Grethe for all her help during the Firewall coverage and for keeping me on my lazy feet. The much anticipated Firewall trailer is online at Moviefone. The size/quality is awful but at least we get to see SOMETHING. It has been too long since Harrison fans have had a movie to look forward to and from the looks of this trailer, we are in for a treat.

    Check out the trailer

Something worth mentioning. On Moviefone's site it says Harrison character name is Jack Stanfield and IMDB has it listed as Jack Williams but as far as I am concerned they can just call him Jack Jack.

A special thank you to my long lost dear friend Rooster Man for this exciting news.

    Ford back in his 'Element'

According to Variety, Harrison's next movie will be "The Wrong Element", the Joe Forte scripted action/thriller in which Harrison would "play the security chief for a global bank whose family is kidnapped. He's asked to topple his own security safeguards and steal $37 million from the bank to save his family. Then he has to stop the kidnappers, who've created a complex trail that will make him look guilty of embezzlement."

    From: Variety

"Heading back into hero mode, Harrison Ford will topline "The Wrong Element," a thriller to be financed and distributed by Warner Bros.

Beacon Communications topper Armyan Bernstein is producing with Jon Shestack. Joe Forte scripted. A director will be signed shortly.

Ford and Beacon last teamed on the Wolfgang Petersen - directed hit "Air Force One," a film that was also produced by Bernstein and Shestack, who was a Beacon veep at the time.

Here, Ford would play the security chief for a global bank whose family is kidnapped. He's asked to topple his own security safeguards and steal $37 million from the bank to save his family. Then he has to stop the kidnappers, who've created a complex trail that will make him look guilty of embezzlement.

Shestack and Forte set the project up at MGM as a spec script, and Bernstein came in after that studio put it in turnaround. They brought it to WB, which snapped it up and will fully finance it. WB exec Jeff Clifford will steer the project.

Pic will be the next project for Ford, whose plans to reprise his Indiana Jones role were dashed after he, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas felt they needed a new script. Ford last starred in "Hollywood Homicide." He's repped by UTA and McQueeney Management.

"The Wrong Element" will be the first go picture at WB for Shestack, who has a deal at the studio."
