Harrison Attended Launch of Invitrogen Grant-Giving Programs

The Invitrogen Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Invitrogen Corporation, celebrated the launch of its first grant programs at a dinner reception on June 18 attended by sociobiologist E.O. Wilson, Ph.D., actor and conservationist Harrison Ford, and leaders of the biotechnology community. In addition, the Foundation announced it now has more than USD 2 million, donated by Invitrogen Corporation, to support programs and organizations dedicated to increasing participation in and understanding of the life sciences. |
| In its first grant programs, the Invitrogen Foundation has partnered with the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and Sally Ride Science. The Foundation and the NAS will launch a public education campaign to engage people of all ages and levels of scientific expertise in learning more about today's most pressing scientific issues. In collaboration with Sally Ride Science, The Foundation will support the development of a book about biotechnology and related careers. The book will also introduce diverse role models in biotechnology, and encourage students to use science in their everyday lives.
Dr. Wilson, a world leader in entomology (=the scientific study of insects), is a major voice in efforts to maintain the earth's ecosystems. The E.O Wilson Biodiversity Foundation seeks to preserve biological diversity by inventing and implementing conservational business and educational strategies. In addition to serving on the board of the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation, Harrison Ford is a board member of Conservation International, an organization that also seeks to preserve global biodiversity for future generations. The Invitrogen Foundation has historically supported the Biodiversity Foundation through contributions. Invitrogen said on June 12 that it will buy Applera Corp.'s Applied Biosystems Group in a USD 6.7 billion dollar deal to create a biotechnology giant. R.I.P Stan Winston

Special Effects guru (puppets, make-up, prosthetics) and multiple Oscar and Emmy nominee / winner Stan Winston passed away on Monday June 15. He was 62 years old and suffered from cancer for the last seven years of his life. The picture top should give a few clues to how important this man was. He was responsible for the design of the creatures above -- instantly recognizeable all over the world -- plus quite a few more: he also did work on e.g The Star Wars Christmas Special, Roots, Friday the 13th III, Starman, Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns, Interview with the Vampire, Ghosts, A.I., War of the Worlds and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. As if that wasn't enough: he also contributed to music videos (for Michael Jackson, Billy Idol, Guns'N'Roses, Styx) and a number of commercials. The man's work lives on even if he's gone but may we suggest you check up his impressive CV: See his works again -- and tick off the following upcoming movies on the calendar. They all feature work from his hand and/or studio: G.I. Joe, Terminator 4, Shutter Island and Avatar, all due in 2009. |
