The other Empire picture

THE OTHER EMPIRE PICTURE FROM INDIANA JONES 4

Front : Cate Blanchett, Harrison Ford.
Background: Andrew Divoff (left) and Pavel Lynchnikoff (right)

The below mentioned article in the March 2008 issue of Empire Magazine contains another new (and great!!) photo. At last Cate Blanchett in action as Irina Spalko - and Harrison looking scruffy - the Indy way.

The guys in the background are interesting. We believe the actors are Andrew Divoff (left) and Pavel Lynchnikoff (right), Both speak excellent Russian (Lynchnikoff is a native Muscovite; Divoff is Venezuelan but speaks half a dozen languages fluently, Russian among them); both could be seen manhandling Indy in the first official video (from the shooting in New Mexico).... Now for the really interesting part: they are dressed in US uniforms. (The name tag on Lynchnikoff's uniform ends in --evelt. Roosevelt ??)

Let's say we draw the inevitable conclusion and we won't be the least surprised if one of the characters' name is really (highlight to make visible) Dovchenko.

PS. Divoff and Lynchnikoff have portrayed many Russian or Russian heritage characters on TV as well as on the big screen, they've also worked with Harrison before: remember Air Force One??

New Indy pic in UK's Empire Magazine

NEW INDY PIC IN EMPIRE MAGAZINE

Scan from March 2008 Issue of Empire Magazine

A Soviet RPG-2 Grenade Launcher

UK's Empire Magazine publishes a new picture from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (KotCS) in their March 2008 issue, which hits the streets on tomorrow. Regular subscribers should have it already.

Producer Frank Marshall told Empire that Steven Spielberg is "pretty much" done editing and that John Williams starts scoring the movie in February. He also said that KotCS is tonally related to Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade when it comes to bantering between the characters.

We find Indy's weapons upgrade interesting; as far as we can judge, the bigger gun is a Soviet RPG-2 Grenade Launcher (these blowtubes aren't really called 'a bazooka' since the Bazooka is a specific US WWII line of grenade launchers.) The RPG-2 was in Red Army use from 1949 - 1962, The weapon is also known to many South East Asia veterans since it was licenced to a number of countries, notably The People's Republic of China (there called type 56) and (North) Vietnam (types B40 / B50).

The later RPG-7 - today's favorite among insurgents of all calibers - weren't in regular Red Army use until 1961.

We notice that the picture setting is rainforest - and guess that the threesome's transport is also courtesy the Red Army. That assumption is based on Hawaii set pictures (found here) and pictures of the upcoming tie-in Lego sets (pictures here).

Big thanks to HFW member -Jones- for the magazine scan and tips/corrections on RPGs (we first assumed the launcher was a RPG-7 despite the post 1957 service date. A correct service period and a more thorough study of the trigger of the RPG in indy's hand has made us go for the RPG-2.)

Ryan Update: Fernando Mereilles to direct By Any Means Necessary?

RYAN UPDATE: MEREILLES TO DIRECT BY ANY MEANS BECESSARY?

Brazilian director Fernando Mereilles
Brazilian website Cinema em Cena, confirms the rumor that Golden Globes and Oscar nominated Brazilian director Fernando Mereilles (City of Gods, The Constant Gardener, City of Men) "is considering" an offer to direct By Any Means Necessary - and that he hasn't decided yet.

The director is presently finishing Blindness (an adaption of Nobel Prize winner José Saramango's novel Ensaio Sobre a Cegueira (starring Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Gael García Bernal, Danny Glover, Alice Braga and Sandra Oh) and has Love's Labors Lost in development. The latter is a loose adaptation of Shakespeare's comedy based on Jorge Furtado's 2006 novel of the same name (Trabalhos de amor perdidos). If realized, Mereiiles will direct and produce.

Fernando Mereilles is also involved as a producer in three additional projects: Uprising (2008), Xingu (2009) and Round Trip (2009). Getting him on Ryan would certainly be a fresh take. Mereilles sure knows how to wield a high quality thriller way beyond content-free boredom.

One Ryan Rumor Debunked, a new Ryan in the making?

ONE RYAN RUMOR DEBUNKED, A NEW RYAN IN THE MAKING?

Top:Harrison Ford, Philip Noyce
Bottom: Ryan Gosling, Antoine Fuqua
A rumor was shot down this weekend: Harrison Ford and director Philip Noyce are not reteaming to revive the Jack Ryan series in By Any Means Necessary. The source: Philip Noyce himself - at the G'Day USA Black Tie Gala in L.A on Saturday Jan. 19, where Noyce was an awardee. Who presented the award to him? Harrison Ford. (See pictures here)

The rumor has been on the grapevine since the failure of Sum of All Fears (starring Ben Affleck as Jack Ryan) Sum was originally set to be directed by Noyce with Harrison starring as Jack Ryan, but Harrison pulled out of the project for script reasons - and Noyce followed suit. The two were replaced by Ben Affleck and director Phil Alden Robinson -- and the results were less than satisfactory.

Paramount owns the right to do movies on the Jack Ryan character, but they do not own the rights to Tom Clancy's novels. It's no big secret that Tom Clancy never fancied Harrison as Jack Ryan and that he rather saw him replaced by someone else. Nevertheless - money talks. Clancy developed a followup to Sum of All Fears called Red Rabbit before Sum went into production and was clearly not unhappy when Harrison walked. With the failure of Sum, Rabbit, Clancy - and Ben Affleck - were put into cold storage.

Paramount obviously still feels there's money in the Ryan franchise and Philip Noyce was working briefly on a followup to Harrison's last outing as Ryan (Clear and Present Danger in 1994). The followup was to be called By Any Means Necessary - and the fact that Noyce was working on it inevitably fostered the rumor that Harrison would be signing up to revive the Ryan character with his original director. Now we know that neither Noyce nor Ford are attached to this project, nor is Noyce working on it anymore and this is what he confirmed on Saturday night.

However - Noyce did indicate that Paramount still wants to do more Ryan, but that they're working to find a "young Ryan" replacement. He had "heard" that the choice could very well be 27 year old Canadian Ryan Gosling (Lars and the Real Girl) - and if ever realized, the script will not be based on any of Tom Clancy's novels or other work.

By chance, Paramount picked up a script by Daniel Pyne in 2005. This script was called By Any Means Necessary but it was not about Jack Ryan. Naturally there's speculation that is the script Noyce was working on, trying to to turn it into a Ryan relaunch. The original Pyne script is about a cop who turns to a jailed mobster for insider information in order to stop a terrorist attack

There is a project listed on IMDb Pro with the same title and the original Pyne plotline. The project is confirmed and is listed as "in development". There's yet no cast, no mention of Philip Noyce and 2009 is set as the opening frame. Director Antoine Fuqua (of music video fame, also the the original choice as director of American Gangster) will be at the helm.

To us the indicating clue (despite titles -) is found, or rather not found - on the producers list: Mace Neufeld - key producer for all four previous Jack Ryan movies - honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for (among other things) his Ryan involvement. On Neufeld's plate for 2009 - with the Weinsteins: The Equalizer, a big screen treatment of the classic TV show about the veteran covert operative who, seeking redemption for his dark deeds, quits a CIA-like agency and puts a classified advertisement in the paper that reads simply: "Got a problem? Odds against you? Call the Equalizer."

Take as is, but we find the lack of Neufeld on By Any Means Necessary pretty decisive. We willl, however, follow Gosling, Fuqua - and Neufeld - with considerable interest.

Black tie alert: It's time for the yearly Australia.com Black Tie Gala and honors. This year's honors are presented to to Kylie Minogue and director Philip Noyce for "significant contributions in their respective industries and for excellence in promoting Australia in the U.S".
The award presenters are none other than John Travolta - and Harrison Ford. The event is due this weekend: Saturday January 19 at the Hollywood & Highland Grand Ballroom in Los Angeles.

Minogue was recently honored with an OBE (=Order of the British Empire) for her career and work for victims of breast cancer - and confesses to being a fan of the musical Grease. Noyce directed Harrison in his outings as CIA agent Jack Ryan in Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger. He was also responsible for the lauded and much awarded The Rabbit-Proof Fence and The Quiet American.

Indiana Jones Tie-In Products Spoilers Galore; Topps IJ Heritage Sketch Cards Overview

INDIANA JONES TIE-IN PRODUCTS SPOILERS GALORE
...and Topps IJ Heritage Sketch Cards Overview Flyer

It's no secret that security on Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull has been tight but there have been major leaks. The first came from Shia LeBeouf already when he was in top secret negotiations for the part as Mutt. The next came when an unfortunate extra talked too much to his hometown newspaper.

The former is now the industry's upcoming golden boy and is obviously forgiven his previous sin, the latter was dragged to court for his big mouth and the case was settled on undisclosed terms. The extra's hometown newspaper probably got a friendly call and prompty protected their online interview with a required registration feature (userid and password)

The other major leaks have come from the major players in the tie-in game, notably Lego and Hasbro - mainly in the form of presskits, newsletters or 2008 catalogs to their distributors. Many of these companies' distributors have their own websites - and that's how the information hit the Net and a potentially big audience.

It goes without saying that people hired by Lucasfilm directly have to sign a cover-it-all non-disclosure agreement. The tie-in partners obviously don't and for an equally obvious reason: Lucasfilm can't very well force a blatant non-disclosure down the throats of companies they don't control. But we admit our moral instincts are piqued: we don't know the terms of the Lucas Licencing tie-in contracts but it is not unlikely they might contain some sort of agreement on not to publish material containing information on KotCS until an agreed date and perhaps even penalty for breaches of contract.

Nevertheless, terms or not: major spoilers are now out in the wide open - and they remain and have remained there with no apparent effect on the spoiler sources: the major tie-in partners.

We don't know what's going on at the moment in the various board rooms and we're pretty sure the legal terms have been fullfilled to the dot - but this still doesn't smell good: one individual - an extra - gets his tongue tied and has his professional reputation destroyed. Major (and loaded) business partners and friends seem to get away with it. Who knows; perhaps allowing the spoilers to stay is even part of the overall marketing strategy - -

We know well there's precious little help in howling at the moon when serious business is involved but we choose to do so anyway:
This is unfair; also unwise re: in-house morale and company reputation in the long run.

One company that has remained solidly on safe ground so far is Topps. We got in a new flyer from them last night, showcasing an overview of the sketch cards available in their Indiana Jones Heritage series. Click thumb below to see the flyer bigger size:

Rumor: Harrison in 'Lincoln'??

RUMOR: HARRISON IN LINCOLN???

The Man After Lincoln:
Andrew Johnson
The latest on the rumor mill: Is Harrison the actor Steven Spielberg has in mind for the role of Andrew Johnson, the Vice President who became President when Abraham Lincoln was murdered on April 15, 1865???

Steven Spielberg probably has the busiest agenda in Hollywood: no less than four heavy post Indiana Jones 4 projects have been reported as being on the director's pad: Tintin (a series of three movies in collaboration with Peter Jackson, two of the them have been officially announced), Chicago 7 (Spielberg's next official project), Interstellar and Lincoln.

Lincoln is based on the biography by Pulitzer prize winner Doris Kearns Goodwin, with an original screenplay by John Logan, Paul Webb and Tony Kushner. Looking at the list of other central people behind the camera is an experience of serious dejá vu: Producers: Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy. Music: John Williams, Cinematography: Janusz Kaminski, Editor: Michael Kahn. Already cast in the title role as Abraham Lincoln: Liam Neeson, who is and has been doing extremely thorough preparations for the role. (Let us add that on top of our personal wishes list is Johnny Depp as John Wilkes Booth - not that that is ever going to happen. Depp is extremely busy until 2010, he also doesn't come for free.) Preliminary release date of Lincoln is listed as 2009 but it is by no means certain.

This is a project we're really enthusiastic about: in our opinion Harrison would fit like a hand in a glove in the Andrew Johnson part and not only for the uncanny physical likeness. With the Sebastián Cordero Manhunt project in limbo (where Harrison was cast as Col. Everton Conger) Lincoln would also be a wonderful chance for Liam Neeson and Harrison to show what they're really made of after the artistically successful but financially failing K-19 The Widowmaker in 2002. (And getting the excellent Johnny Depp on board would have been nothing less than marvellous!!!)
