Tidbits
  • Harrison was asked to cut his hair for the film. He refused, stating that his role was too short, and offered to wear a hat instead
  • The movie's 1978 theatrical re-release contains the famous sequence where Falfa belts out South Pacific's An Enchanted Evening to his less than enthusiastic passenger. The lack of enthusiasm went as far as Richard Rogers, who felt that Harrison's severely tone deaf and badly add-libbed version was an insult to his and late partner Oscar Hammerstein's talents. The sequence was thus cut from the original 1973 release, but was reinserted for the 1978 re-release when George Lucas felt he had enough muscle to ignore the composer's pleads
  • Off the set pranks included urinating in the local Holiday Inn ice machines (Harrison says he didn't -), setting a motel room on fire and throwing co-star Richard Dreyfuss into the hotel pool
  • The '55 Chevy Bob Falfa drove is the same '55 Chevy used in the movie Two Lane Blacktop
  • About 300 pre-1962 cars were needed to create the cruising scenes, and over a thousand car buffs, who responded to ads in the local newspapers, were interviewed
  • Filmed in 29 days
  • Was selected for the Library of Congress National Film Registry
