Liam Neeson in advanced talks to join Harrison Ford in the Kathryn Bigelow-directed Cold War Soviet sub thriller "K-19: The Widowmaker."

For National Geographic Films, which has spent four years developing the film, the pic allows the producer to stick its flag in one of the town's biggest projects. It's the first of many historical outdoor adventure properties NGF has been developing over the past few years as an outgrowth to the documentaries, magazine articles and expeditions that the National Geographic Society underwrites.

NGF will use the "K-19" momentum to hatch several projects, including "Endurance," which Wolfgang Petersen will direct, based on the Alfred Lansing book about the disastrous Antarctic expedition lead by Ernest Shakleton and a decade-old National Geographic docu. Petersen and partner Gail Lyon have been trying to convince Mel Gibson to sign on.
