Air Force One took off, as expected, to land at the top of the movie box-office charts. The high-in-the-sky adventure, starring Harrison Ford as a very take-charge president, was dubbed "a very good movie" by President Bill Clinton, who has seen it twice. The public seemed to agree. Preliminary figures for this opening weekend show that the film will have racked up $37.1 million in ticket sales.

The action film's arrival left well in its backdraft the comedy George of The Jungle, which remained in second position with a take of $13.2 million. Those other fighters of terror up above, the alien destroyers of Men in Black found themselves down to third place, but their $12.6 million was a healthy addition for the off-beat hit, which has now earned $194.3 million in its four weeks of release.

Meantime, Jodie Foster's alien encounter Contact registered as No. 4, earning $9.5 million.

Following on behind were the other newcomer of the weekend, the fast-food frolic Good Burger (7.3 million), Nothing to Lose ($6.7 million) and Face/Off ($5.6 million).

Julia Roberts' successful romantic comedy My Best Friend's Wedding is now at No. 8, having taken in an additional $4.5 million. Rounding out the top ten were the animated Hercules (2.9 million) and Operation Condor ($1.6 million).
